Paul Rhoads is the new Iowa State football coach, according to an ISU press release. He will be introduced to the media at 5 p.m. press conference today and will speak to Cyclone fans at halftime of the men’s basketball game against Jacksonville State tonight.

The Ankeny native agreed to a five-year deal worth $5.75 million guaranteed with incentives available to increase the total.

“Paul Rhoads is an outstanding and intelligent football coach, a highly successful national recruiter and has nearly 10 years of experience as a BCS coordinator,” athletic director Jamie Pollard said in a statement. “During our exhaustive interview process, he was the one candidate that clearly demonstrated both extensive experience and an extreme passion for and familiarity with our institution. In addition, and most importantly, he also has a comprehensive plan for how to be successful at Iowa State. He is a great fit for our institution.”

Rhoads served as the Auburn defensive coordinator in 2008. He was the Pittsburgh defensive coordinator from 2000-07. The Panthers won the Big East title in 2004. Five of his Pittsburgh defenses were ranked in the top 30 nationally in scoring. Before that he was a member of Dan McCarney’s first staff, coaching in Ames from 1995-99. He served as inside linebackers and the secondary. He spent the 1994 season as Pacific’s passing game coordinator.

The 41-year-old has also been a graduate assistant at Ohio State and Utah State.

“It has been a professional goal of mine to become a head coach since my dad introduced me to the game as a kid and I could not have found a more perfect place than Iowa State,” Rhoads said in a statement. “I know how special Ames and ISU were to me during my first tenure and having the chance to return and lead this program reads like a Hollywood script. I want to express my most sincere appreciation to Dr. Geoffroy and Jamie (Pollard) for the opportunity.”

Rhoads earned special mention all-state honors as a safety at Ankeny High School. He also earned three letters as a defensive back at Missouri Western in the 1980s. His father, Cecil, is a member of the Iowa High School Football Coaches Hall of Fame.

Its good to have Paul back with us. Perhaps he can right this ship that has been sinking since Jamie Pollard fired Dan McCarney. Wasn't there some sort of litmus test about someone who represents the athletic department bringing shame or bad publicity to the University being subject to immediate dismissal? I contend that if Jamie Pollard didn't do this when he fired Dan McCarney, then surely he did place himself in jeopardy by hiring Gene Chizik. I feel like the hiring of Rhodes is an apology. But I don't think its enough for Jamie to keep his job.
