Doctors told Iowa State center Reggie Stephens to take it one week at a time as he tried to come back from an appendectomy.

It turns out Stephens didn’t even need a week.

Four days after having his appendix removed, Stephens has been cleared by doctors to play and he is expected to start against No. 18 Oklahoma State on Saturday.

“I plan on being back,” Stephens said. “Missing one game was enough.”

Football coach Paul Rhoads — and the ISU medical staff — where shocked to hear Stephens would be back so soon. Rhoads initially thought Stephens may miss the rest of the season.

Instead, Rhoads was told if Stephens felt good enough on Saturday the doctors would have allowed him to face Texas A&M. Stephens didn’t play in the game because he was still too sore from surgery.

“The procedure has changed so much since all of our fathers had it done,” Rhoads said. “Three holes: one to put air in there, one to see what they are doing and one to take it out with and they think he’ll be back ready to go.”

Last year ISU’s starting center, Mike Knapp, also underwent an appendectomy. He missed 25 days, partially due to complications from surgery.

Stephens first felt pain last Sunday, but thought he had a stomach ache. The pain intensified on Monday and Tuesday, but it didn’t keep him out of practice on Tuesday.

He first went to the doctor Wednesday morning and was told everything was fine, but when the pain increased in the afternoon he went back and surgery was scheduled.

“I went into the doctor at 3 and by 4:30 they told me I was going to have surgery,” Stephens said. “By 5 I was under.”

Stephens rode a stationary bike on Sunday and will be put on a rehab program starting Monday.

“They took it out so I can’t hurt it anymore,” Stephens said. “The only thing I have to worry about is the stitches. I’m sure I’ll be sore after the game, but if we get this win it will be worth it.”
