A weekend away

I leave for the Chicagoland area for the weekend and a few things happened. Here is a recap:

1. Linn-Mar's Kiah Stokes, a 6-foot-3 post, made the women's U16 national team after tryouts in Colorado. Stokes, who averaged 16 points and 13 rebounds as a sophomore, will play on the American team in the FIBA Americans U16 Championship, which has not set a date or location.

This may be the first sign that if Iowa State is to sign Stokes the Cyclones will probably battle not only Iowa--her father, Greg, played basketball for the Hawkeyes--but the nationals powers for her services.

I've heard glowing reviews about Stokes for over a year. I watched her at the state tournament. From everything I’ve seen and heard Stokes is the kind of player any program would go after. Making the national team may have just proved it.

Ballard's Taylor Greenfield also tried out for the U16 national team. Like Stokes, Greenfield is an ISU recruiting target for the 2011. And even though she didn't make the national team, just like Stokes, Greenfield may draw national interest.

2. I walked into the office Monday to find out the Super Bowl is set for 11 a.m. on Sept. 12 at Jack Trice Stadium. I think the early start time for the ISU-Iowa showdown is the best thing for everyone, and not just journalists who won't have to write on deadline.

With the early start, the dedicated tailgater can get a nice breakfast spread going as a warm-up to the in-state rivalry. And if ISU wins, the food and drink can flow through the parking lots and on Welch Avenue the rest of the day in celebration. If ISU goes down, the food and drink can flow through the parking lots and on Welch Avenue the rest of the day as everyone tries to forget what happened.

Public service announcement for those choosing to imbibe in adult beverages instead of Cokes: drink responsibly and have a designated driver. That way everyone will make it home safe and be able to make it to Arrowhead Stadium for the Kansas State game.

3. I went to Illinois to see a friend of mine this weekend before he heads to China for a year. He's known as the International Man of Mystery because he's spent as much time out of the country as he has in it since college.

So I met up with my buddy, who has played professional basketball in Central America, at an outdoor court to shoot around and catch up. Without having picked up a basketball in almost two years, I went out and beat the pro in a game of H-O-R-S-E and put together a rousing comeback, scoring the final 17 points to pull out the upset.

It just goes to show you Cinderella can strike on any basketball court. I can't wait to see who the Cinderella will be at the 2010 NCAA Tournament. It's only nine months away.
