Gold beats Cardinal in spring game

The Gold team defeated the Cardinal team 34-16 in the Iowa State spring football game Saturday.

The No. 1 defense and No. 2 offense made up the Gold team. The No. 1 offense and No. 2 defense were the Cardinal team.

The starting defense shined, forcing two turnovers and creating all kinds of pressure on pass plays. Quarterback Jermoe Tiller led the Gold offense to three second-half scoring drives.

Tiller threw for 210 yards. He had two touchdowns and one interception. He had a 65 yard touchdown run and threw touchdown passes to tight end Kurt Hammerschmidt and wide receiver Wallace Franklin.

Running back Jeremiah Schwartz had a one-yard touchdown run for the Gold team. Jesse Smith also had a 39-yard interception return for a touchdown for the Gold team.

Quarterback Austen Arnaud was 22-of-35 for 250 yards. He had one touchdown, a 1-yad pass to wide receiver Joel Zitek, and two interceptions. Kicker Grant Mahoney had three field goals for the Cardinal team.

Both defenses combined for three interceptions and six sacks. Sedrick Johnson led all receivers with nine catches for 100 yards, but he also dropped several passes. Wide out Lonzie Range also had six catches for 64 yards.
